400x400 mm Tiles (16x16 inch): Uses, Coverage and Tips

400x400 mm tiles are a sturdy square size for parking, driveways and outdoor floors. Coverage per tile, tiles per 100 sq ft and laying tips.

400x400 mm tiles

400x400 mm is a square size you mostly meet outdoors. In Bengaluru it is very common for house parking areas, driveways and sit-outs, where thick, textured tiles in this size handle vehicles, rain and dust better than smooth indoor tiles.

Size in feet and where it is used

400 x 400 mm is about 1.3 x 1.3 ft, close to 16 x 16 inches. It is typically used on:

  • Parking areas and car porches of independent houses
  • Driveways and entrance paths
  • Garden paths and sit-outs
  • Some older indoor floors, though indoors it has largely given way to 600x600

Coverage per tile

DetailValue
Size400 x 400 mm (about 1.3 x 1.3 ft)
Area per tileabout 1.72 sq ft
Tiles per 100 sq ft (before wastage)about 59

The working: 400 x 400 = 160,000 sq mm, divided by 92,903 sq mm per sq ft, gives 1.72 sq ft. Add 5 to 10 percent for cuts along gates, drains and curved edges. Use the tile calculator for your exact area.

Box quantities change with manufacturer and thickness, so check the label or ask us instead of assuming.

Tile types you usually find in this size

  • Parking tiles, which are usually thicker than indoor floor tiles, with textured or patterned surfaces
  • Heavy-duty anti-skid outdoor tiles
  • Interlocking-look, cobble-look and stone-look designs
  • Some full body vitrified tiles, where scratches show less because the colour runs through

Laying and handling tips

  • For parking, the base matters as much as the tile. A solid, well-compacted concrete base stops tiles from cracking under car wheels.
  • Give the area a slight slope so rainwater drains away and does not pool, which matters in the monsoon.
  • Use a strong outdoor-grade adhesive or a proper mortar bed, and fill joints fully so water cannot get under the tiles.
  • Thick parking tiles are heavy. Carry and stack boxes carefully to avoid chipped edges.

Common questions

How many 400x400 mm tiles do I need for 100 sq ft?

Each tile covers about 1.72 sq ft, so roughly 59 tiles for 100 sq ft before wastage. Add 5 to 10 percent for cuts and breakage.

What size is 400x400 mm in feet?

It is about 1.3 x 1.3 ft, or close to 16 x 16 inches. Some people round it to 1.25 ft.

Tiles sold as parking tiles in this size are usually thicker and made for vehicle loads. Ordinary indoor floor tiles of the same size are not, so ask specifically for parking tiles.

It depends on the manufacturer and thickness. Ask the shop for the box count of the exact tile you choose.
