300x300 mm Tiles (1x1 ft): Uses, Coverage and Tips

300x300 mm tiles are the classic 1x1 ft size for bathroom floors, balconies and terraces. Coverage per tile, tiles per 100 sq ft and laying tips.

300x300 mm tiles

300x300 mm is the small square size most people know as the 1x1 ft tile. It has been around for decades and is still the usual choice for bathroom floors, balconies and other wet or outdoor spots where grip and drainage matter more than a big, joint-free look.

Size in feet and where it is used

A 300 mm tile is just under 1 ft (1 ft is 304.8 mm), so it is sold and spoken of as 1x1 ft. You will mostly see it on:

Coverage per tile

DetailValue
Size300 x 300 mm (about 1 x 1 ft)
Area per tileabout 0.97 sq ft
Tiles per 100 sq ft (before wastage)about 104

The working: 300 x 300 = 90,000 sq mm, divided by 92,903 sq mm per sq ft, gives 0.97 sq ft. Add 5 to 10 percent for cuts and breakage, more if the room has many corners. Our tile calculator does this for you.

Box quantities vary by manufacturer and thickness, so check the box label or ask us for the design you choose rather than going by a fixed number.

Tile types you usually find in this size

  • Anti-skid tiles with a textured matt surface for bathroom and balcony floors
  • Ceramic tiles in plain and printed designs
  • Terracotta-look and stone-look outdoor tiles
  • Heat-reflective terrace tiles

Glossy finishes are less common in this size because it is mostly used on wet floors.

Laying and handling tips

  • Small tiles follow a slope easily, which is why tilers like them in shower areas where water must run to the drain.
  • More grout lines means more grip but also more cleaning. A grey or darker grout hides dirt better on balconies.
  • Use spacers so the lines stay straight across the room. See our grout and spacers guide.
  • Lay out a few tiles dry before fixing to check the pattern and shade.

Common questions

How many 300x300 mm tiles do I need for 100 sq ft?

Each tile covers about 0.97 sq ft, so you need roughly 104 tiles for 100 sq ft before wastage. Add around 5 to 10 percent extra for cuts and breakage.

Is 300x300 mm exactly 1 ft by 1 ft?

Not exactly. 1 ft is 304.8 mm, so a 300 mm tile is a little under a foot. Shops and customers still call it 1x1 ft.

Why are 300x300 tiles used in bathrooms?

Smaller tiles mean more grout lines, which give extra grip underfoot, and they are easier to slope towards the drain than large tiles.

How many 300x300 tiles come in a box?

It depends on the manufacturer and the tile thickness, so we do not quote a fixed number. Ask the shop for the box quantity of the exact design you pick.
