Front Elevation Tiles: Stone and Brick Looks for House Exteriors
Front elevation tile guide for Bengaluru houses: stone, brick and strip looks, fixing on exterior walls, colours that handle dust and rain, and tips.

The front elevation is the face of your house. In Bengaluru, independent houses and small builder floors often use elevation tiles to cover columns, the front wall, the compound wall and the area around the gate. These tiles must look good from the road and also handle years of sun, monsoon rain and road dust.
What an exterior wall goes through
- Sun and UV. West and south facing walls get strong sun, which can fade poor-quality coatings.
- Monsoon rain. Rain runs down walls, carrying dust and leaving streaks.
- Dust and pollution. Homes on busy roads collect a layer of grime on textured surfaces.
- Heat movement. Walls warm up and cool down every day, which tests how well tiles are fixed.
- Height. Tiles fixed high up must stay put. A falling tile is a safety hazard.
Recommended tiles
Elevation tiles are made for exterior walls. Common looks include:
| Look | Where it suits |
|---|---|
| Natural stone and slate | Columns, feature walls, compound walls |
| Brick or strip tiles | Front walls, around windows, modern facades |
| Wood-look strips | Accent bands, balcony fronts |
| Sandstone or plain textured | Large wall areas, calm look |
A rustic finish gives a natural stone feel and hides dust. A carving finish adds raised texture that catches sunlight and creates shadow, which looks rich on columns and feature panels. Smooth glossy tiles are less common outside because they show streaks and reflect glare.
Choose vitrified or porcelain elevation tiles with low water absorption so they do not soak up rainwater and grow moss.
Fixing matters
Exterior walls are not the place to cut corners. Ask your contractor about:
- Exterior-grade adhesive rather than plain cement paste. Our guide on tile adhesive vs cement mortar explains why.
- A sound, cured plaster base. Tiles on loose or cracked plaster will fail.
- Full back coverage. Butter the back of the tile and the wall so there are no hollow spots.
- Proper grout and sealing at the top edges, so rainwater does not get behind the tiles.
Design tips
- Use elevation tiles as accents, not on every wall. Columns, a feature panel next to the main door and the compound wall are usually enough.
- Coordinate with the parking and gate. The front of the house is seen as one picture from the road.
- Mix two tones, such as grey stone with a warm brick strip, for a balanced facade.
- Mind the light. Textured tiles look strongest on walls that get side light in the morning or evening.
- Continue into the garden and pathways with related colours for a complete exterior.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using interior wall tiles outside. They are often more porous and not made for weather.
- Plain white or very light smooth tiles on a road-facing wall. Dust streaks show quickly.
- Fixing heavy tiles high up with only cement paste.
- Choosing from a single small piece. Elevation designs look very different on a large wall, so view several pieces together.

Common questions
What are elevation tiles?
Elevation tiles are wall tiles designed for the outside of a building. They usually come in stone, brick, wood or strip patterns and are made to handle sun and rain.
How are elevation tiles fixed?
They should be fixed with a good exterior-grade tile adhesive on a sound plastered wall, not just with cement paste. On high walls, mechanical support may be advised for larger or heavier tiles.
Do elevation tiles fade in the sun?
Glazed vitrified and porcelain elevation tiles usually hold their colour well because the colour is fired into the glaze. Cheaper painted or coated products can fade, so ask about the tile type.
Which colours are best for a Bengaluru house front?
Greys, warm stone shades, sandstone and brick reds handle dust and rain streaks better than pure white or very dark colours.
