Stainless Steel Kitchen Sinks: Sizes, Depth and What to Ask
Stainless steel kitchen sinks for Indian cooking: bowl sizes, depth, drainboards, steel grade and gauge, finishes and fitting in a granite counter.

The stainless steel sink is still the default in most Indian kitchens, and for good reason. It handles heavy vessels, hot water and daily scrubbing, and it is easy to replace later. The things that matter most are the bowl size, the depth and the quality of the steel.
Sizes and bowl shapes
Steel sinks are almost always called by their outer inch size. Single bowl sinks commonly run from 12x12 inch up to 24x18 inch, with bowl depths of about 150 to 230 mm, plus a round bowl option. The table shows typical sizes in that span.
| Sold as | Approx. size | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 12x12 inch | 305x305 mm | Bar counters, pooja or utility wash points |
| 16x16 or 18x16 inch | 405x405 to 460x405 mm | Compact kitchens, small families |
| 20x17 inch | 510x430 mm | Most apartment kitchens |
| 24x18 inch | 610x460 mm | Large vessels, bigger families |
| Round bowl | Varies | Small counters, secondary sink |
Bowl size and Indian cooking
Think about the biggest vessel you wash every day. A large kadai, a 5 litre pressure cooker or a wide tawa needs a bowl that can take it flat, or water sprays everywhere while you scrub. Many families wash vessels squatting or standing at a separate utility sink, and a 24x18 inch bowl in the utility area makes that easier. For the main kitchen sink, go as large as your platform length allows.
Depth and splashing
A shallow bowl splashes onto the counter and your clothes, especially with a strong tap. A deeper bowl, around 200 mm or more, keeps water in and hides dirty vessels. Very deep bowls can strain your back if your platform is already high, so balance the two.
With or without a drainboard
A drainboard is a ribbed flat area next to the bowl where washed vessels can drip. It is handy if you have the counter length, but it uses space you could use for cutting and cooking. In short apartment platforms, most people skip it and use a dish rack instead.
Steel grade, gauge and finish
Not all steel sinks are the same. Specifications vary by maker, so ask these questions at the counter:
- What grade of stainless steel is it? Food-grade grades resist rust better. Ask what grade the sink is made from and check the marking if there is one.
- What is the sheet thickness (gauge)? Thicker sheet dents less and makes less noise when water hits it. Press the bowl bottom; it should not flex easily.
- Is there sound-deadening on the underside? Some sinks have a coating or pads that reduce drumming noise.
Finish: glossy (mirror) finish looks bright when new but shows every scratch and water spot. Matt and satin finishes hide scratches and hard water marks far better, which helps with Bengaluru's borewell water.
Top-mount vs under-mount in granite
- Top-mount (drop-in): the sink rim sits on top of the granite cut-out. Easy to fit and replace, and it works with any counter.
- Under-mount: the sink is fixed below the granite so you can wipe the counter straight into it. It needs an accurate cut-out with a polished edge and strong clamps, and is harder to replace later.
Give the granite fabricator the sink template before they cut.
Waste coupling and overflow
Check that the sink comes with, or suits, a good waste coupling with a basket strainer to catch food. A sink with an overflow hole lets water drain if the outlet is blocked, which helps when you leave a vessel soaking. Use a proper bottle trap or P-trap below to stop drain smells.

Common questions
What size steel sink is best for an Indian kitchen?
If you wash big kadais, tawas and pressure cookers daily, a single bowl of around 24x18 inch with good depth is easiest. Smaller sizes like 18x16 inch suit compact kitchens, bar counters and utility areas.
How deep should a kitchen sink be?
Steel sinks are usually about 150 to 230 mm deep. A deeper bowl cuts splashing and holds large vessels, but very deep bowls make you bend more.
Do steel sinks scratch?
Yes, all stainless steel picks up fine scratches with daily use. A matt or satin finish hides them much better than a glossy mirror finish.
Should I choose a sink with a drainboard?
A drainboard gives a place to rest washed vessels, which is useful if you have counter length to spare. In a short platform, a larger bowl without a drainboard is usually more practical.
