200x1200 mm tiles

200x1200 mm is a long, narrow plank size, made mostly in wooden-finish designs. If you want the warm look of a wood floor without worrying about termites, moisture or scratches, this is the size to look at.

Size in feet and where it is used

200 x 1200 mm is about 8 x 48 inches, or roughly 0.66 x 4 ft. It is commonly used on:

  • Bedroom floors, the most popular spot for wooden tiles
  • Living rooms and study rooms
  • Balconies and sit-outs, in matt or textured outdoor versions
  • Accent walls, such as behind a bed or TV

Coverage per tile

DetailValue
Size200 x 1200 mm (about 0.66 x 4 ft)
Area per tileabout 2.58 sq ft
Tiles per 100 sq ft (before wastage)about 39

The working: 200 x 1200 = 240,000 sq mm, divided by 92,903 sq mm per sq ft, gives 2.58 sq ft. Plank layouts create more offcuts than square tiles, so keep about 10 percent extra for straight layouts and 15 percent or more for herringbone. The tile calculator helps.

Box quantities vary by manufacturer, so check the label or ask us.

Tile types you usually find in this size

  • Wooden finish tiles, mostly glazed vitrified, in light oak to dark walnut shades
  • Matt and rustic textures that feel more like real wood
  • Some concrete-look and stone-look planks

You can also find wooden designs in 600x1200 and smaller planks such as 150x600, depending on what is in stock.

Laying and handling tips

  • Long, narrow tiles can bow slightly. Use a one-third offset (or a random offset) rather than a half offset.
  • Narrow joints of about 2 mm and a grout colour close to the tile make the floor look more like continuous wood.
  • Mix tiles from different boxes as you lay so the grain variation spreads naturally across the room.
  • Herringbone and chevron patterns look great but need more time, more cuts and a skilled tiler.

Common questions

How many 200x1200 mm tiles do I need for 100 sq ft?

Each plank covers about 2.58 sq ft, so roughly 39 tiles for 100 sq ft before wastage. Keep 10 percent extra, more for herringbone.

Why are wooden-finish tiles made in plank sizes?

Real wood flooring comes in long narrow boards, so a plank shape makes the tile look much more like wood than a square tile would.

Which way should I lay plank tiles?

Usually along the longest wall or towards the main light source, which makes the room feel longer. A one-third offset looks natural and reduces lippage.

How many 200x1200 tiles are in a box?

It differs by manufacturer and thickness, so ask the shop for the box count of the design you pick.
